Richard Dunne is a professional football player who was born on November 21, 1979 in Dublin, which is the capital city of the republic of Ireland. As of 2008, he plays as a defender for Manchester City in the English Premier League. Richard Dunne is known in the football world as “Dunney Monster”, a name that has been attributed to his physical stature.


Richard Dunne represents the Republic of Ireland at the international level since 2000 and as of 2008, he has won forty three international caps and has netted 5 international goals, out of which one came from a match that ended as a 2-2 draw against Turkey. He was also a part of the country’s team that appeared for the 2002 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.


Richard Dunne, whose Irish name is Risteárd Ó Duinn, started playing football in 1995 and represented Farm Everton’s youth team. On August 1, 1996 he signed to play for Everton Football Club and made his debut for the club at the age of sixteen. Richard Dunne ended his stint with Everton on October 18, 2000, following which he was signed by Manchester City football club for a transfer fee of £3 million.


Initially, Richard Dunne played in the right-back position, and after few games he switched to the centre of defense, where he made a huge impact on the team with his solid performance. Even though he was suspended by the club in 2003, Richard Dunne made his way back into the club’s first team after a successful and intensive fitness program and established a name for himself in the club. On July 20, 2006, he was made the captain of the team, a post which he took over from Sylvain Distin. His then teammate, Micah Richards said in an interview that Richard Dunne had been performing consistently and feels that he is as good as English players John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.


Richard Dunne had displayed good game skills consistently, which resulted in him being conferred with Manchester City’s “Player of the Year” award for the 2005-2006 season. He came back to receive this award for the following three seasons and holds the rare distinction of becoming the first person to receive Manchester City’s Player of the Year award four times. Richard Dunne signed a four-year contract with Manchester City on July 4, 2008, which keeps him at the club till 2012. As of 2008, he has made 263 appearances for the club and has six goals to his credit.
